During the same time period, the NASDAQ dropped 9.12% and the S&P declined 8.57% as jitters in the financial sector continued and there was no sign that the housing market has bottomed. In fact, the loss in June was the severest monthly loss since the Great Depression.

However, if you are investing heavily in Chinese ADRs (like me), then I am sure you feel even more depressed when looking at your stocks’ performances last month. Of the 82 Chinese ADRs I track regularly, only 6 of them ended the month in the positive territory. All other 76 stocks dropped, and they dropped like a rock: 30 stocks lost more than 20% and 10 more than 30%.

Over the weekend, the big news was that a Chinese investment manager won the bidding to have lunch with Warren Buffet. Considering that the winner of the lunch last year got the chance with a bid of $650,000, it is rather mind-boggling that a year later the winning bid is $2.1 million! Even more telling is the winning bidder is a Chinese investment manager. How appropriate since China is the world's fastest growing economy. Of course, from an investing point of view, China has been anything but hot. On the contrary, the Chinese stock market has been the worst performer of 2008 after more than doubling last year. In the meantime, the Chinese economy keeps growing, increasing non-stop like a juggernaut, but there are some areas of concern. Inflation in 2007 was just 4.7%; in the most recent reading it was 8.7% - the highest in 12 years.

It is almost amazing the degree which Chinese stocks have fallen this year. While retracements aren't unusual after massive rallies, this correction suggests that the Chinese economy will come to a grinding halt. With that in mind, there is a chance the equities market in China is acting like a canary in a mine. More than likely the easy part is over. Chinese investors tapped billions of savings to fuel the rally and were joined by investors from around the world. Now it is going to be a more selective rally based on management competencies as well as potential. China is not immune to the inflationary pressures being felt all over the world, but the government has been able to grin and bear it in the past. The capitalism genie is out of the bottle and with it more freedoms and desires that should drive the nation higher.

China Biotech in Review: A Week of Collaborations

Last week witnessed the formation of an unusually high number of partnerships between biomedical companies, one of them China-based, the other(s) not. That should come as no particular surprise to readers of ChinaBio Today. Given the strong lure of participating in the China biopharma scene, ex-China companies are finding ways to participate in the advantages the country offers.

Perhaps the most unexpected announcement last week came when WuXi PharmaTech (NYSE: WX) announced it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Covance (NYSE: CVD), a fellow CRO with worldwide facilities (see story). Under the new agreement, Covance will now partner with WuXi on the Suzhou toxicology lab that WuXi has been building since Q3 of 2007. Covance will throw $30 million into the new JV, and WuXi will contribute the facility itself, estimated to cost $40 million. WuXi has already begun offering the tox services at a temporary Suzhou lab. Some analysts wondered about whether the collaboration made sense for WuXi. It’s certainly true that Covance will be able to direct a lot of business to WuXi – Covance has revenues of $1.5 billion. But WuXi has always seemed able do a very find job of attracting customers by itself. That makes one wonder what WuXi receives for giving up 50% of the revenues of the JV. Nevertheless, investors certainly cheered the lower risk profile. In a very negative week on Wall Street, WuXi rose 18%, climbing $3.18 to $21.68.

Complete Story »

China 3C Group Hits Major Milestone

With China 3C Group's (CHCG.OB) announcement this week that it has partnered up with major Chinese appliance retailer Yongle to open new stores-within-stores, the company is finally in reach of its long stated goal of having 1000 stores. This is a major achievement, especially given the fact that CHCG has been on a mission to close non-performing stores in the last six months or so.

This is more than a symbolic victory, as Yongle, with 200 locations, is the third largest appliance retailer in China and has 60 stores in Shanghai alone. The agreement is for CHCG to open in 30 Yongle locations, with the possibility for more stores in the future. While it may seem counterintuitive that a major appliance retailer would allow another to open stores within its location, I think this merely attests to the strength of China 3C Group's businesses.
