Wall Street has punished the stock due to  a lackluster  first quarter that saw revenues fall 5%, clipping earnings by 15% from $0.48 to $0.41. The shortfall was due to PFE losing its exclusive on both Norvasc and Zyrtec - a circumstance the company had no control over.</p><p><img align="right" src="http://app.quotemedia.com/quotetools/getChart?chscale=1y&amp;webmasterId=91022&amp;snap=true&amp;symbol=PFE&amp;chtype=AreaChart&amp;chwid=284&amp;chhig=150&amp;chfill=ee0066CC&amp;chfill2=110066CC&amp;chln=0066CC&amp;chmrg=0&amp;chfrmon=false&amp;chton=some" alt="" />The company is still soundly in the driver's seat. Analysts are expecting earnings of $2.35 in 2008,   resulting in a very low forward multiple of  just 7, and are bumping up their 2009 forecasts by 7% to $2.51, which is probably on the conservative side since an array of new products are  already in the pipeline. The dividend of $1.28 currently yields a juicy 7.4% annual return and appears very secure at a payout rate of only 54% of earnings.</p>]]>

I remember the period during the 1990s when the enzyme hadn't been identified yet, and frankly, it was a lot easier to get excited about it then. That's because when it was finally worked out, the protease turned out to be a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18393800?ordinalpos=23&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum">big multifunctional multiprotein complex</a>, and among its many functions was affecting Notch signaling.</p><p>That's worrisome, because a lot of important cellular development pathways go through the Notch receptor, and these are things that you'd really rather not mess with. (Just run the word &quot;notch&quot; through PubMed to see what I mean). Indeed, some of the toxic effects of the earlier gamma secretase inhibitors seem to have been mediated through just those side effects. So for some years now in the gamma secretase field, the hunt has been on for compounds that will shut down beta-amyloid production <a target="_blank" href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18556202?ordinalpos=8&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum">without</a> messing with the other functions of the enzyme complex.</p>]]>

More importantly, investors in the UK group will be looking to see what value the acquisition has added to try and justify the price, consistently seen as much too high, it paid for the US biotech. </p><p>An NPV analysis of MedImmune&rsquo;s products suggests the criticisms levelled at AstraZeneca for over-paying are likely to continue. The total NPV of all products acquired from MedImmune amount to $8.21bn, still only half of the acquisition price, according to EvaluatePharma&rsquo;s NPV Analyzer. Genentech&rsquo;s (DNA) Avastin cancer treatment is approved for sale in the UK, but NICE has determined that it is not cost-effective.<br /><br />The first issue is whether the NHS should provide medical services for cancer patients willing to pay for Avastin or other high cost drugs themselves. Alan Johnson (health secretary) pledged to review &ldquo;top-up payments&rdquo;. Previously, he contended that the practice would break the NHS principle of equal access. According to research firm Frost &amp; Sullivan, the pharmaceutical  outsourcing business in India will grow to around $7 billion by 2013.  A <a href="http://www.biospectrumasia.com/content/100907CHN4308.asp">report</a> by <i>Value Notes</i> forecasts a growth of 23.6 percent annually  for the industry up to 2010</font><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">. </font>&nbsp;</p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Currently, India conducts about  1.5 percent of the global clinical trials.
